Basketball - Sonic Boom Sweep Weekend Games

The KT Sonic Boom swept a pair of important games this weekend to move into third in the standings.

BUSAN, South Korea - The Sonic Boom survived another fourth quarter scare Sunday afternoon, but held on to beat first place Wonju Dongbu Promy 72-65.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, as both teams played struggled to get quality shots. Dongbu failed to get shots off in two of their first three possessions, while KT jumped out to an early five point lead. But Rod Benson's eight points kept Wonju close, but down 15-14 after the first.

The second quarter was as physical as the first, but KT used a 12-3 run to end the second to take a 14 point lead at halftime.

Wonju's frustrations were clearly evident at the beginning of the third, as they were on the end of multiple bad or non-calls which allowed KT to jump out to a 10-1 run, giving them a 20 point lead.

“We made a lot of mistakes, but the rhythm was disturbed early and that’s three straight games the rhythm has been determined early,” said Rod Benson.

But Wonju came out firing in the fourth, cutting the lead to 9 when Charles Rhodes fouled out after a Rod Benson steal and layup with 5:28 left. Ahn Jae-wook led the comeback with three key three pointers, but Choi Yoon-ho missed three crucial free throws with 29.1 seconds left which was enough for KT to secure the win.

“As long as we came out with the victory. We had a back to back, but the odds were against us, and nobody was thinking were were going to win today,” said Charles Rhodes after the game about the teams recent fourth quarter problems.

Kim Do-soo led KT with 20 points, while Cho Sung-min added 19. Rhodes added 17 with 14 rebounds.

Rod Benson led all scorers with 26 and 15 rebounds.

On Saturday, Charles Rhodes dropped 34 points and added 11 rebounds as KT easily again defeated KCC 83-66. Cho Sung-min added 16, as KT's defense held KCC to 32% from the field, while shooting almost 60% for the game.

KT is now 19-9 on the season.
