A Musical Storm Heading for Busan: Bascussion
Yes, boys and girls, Busan survived the typhoon, but another storm of sound and rhythm is brewing and headed this way Saturday September 1st. Bascussion, a funky eight-piece brass band out of Seoul, will be joined by the Ska Walkers, Portugal's MC Armind and France's MC Esia for a night of thunderous movement on the dance floor. Send summer off with some good sounds.
BUSAN, South Korea -- Summertime is when Busan finds its equilibrium; its natural comfort zone in that state of being known as P-A-R-T-Y. In the last few months, we’ve had world-class DJs, bands, dance groups and all kinds of performers come pay a visit to our beautiful city and facilitate our party spirit in unprecedented ways. Haeundae has been crazier than ever, Gwangan got the awesome new Soundwave Festival and it seems more and more people are starting to tap into the Busan party vibe during July and August.
Alas, we are now coming up on the dreaded ninth wheel on the calendar: September. The end of “beach season” and the month characterized by acorns and brown leaves on many a school calendar.
Sad face? HELL NO!
This Saturday, on the first of September, local party-starter booking group Rad City is making a return to the Busan scene after a year-long hiatus. The comeback show is a big one, with a band that embodies the spirit of party: Bascussion!
Bascussion is an eight-piece brass band from Seoul, and no other band on the peninsula is kicking out that brass band funk like these guys! Playing in true New Orleans brass band style, without any amplified instruments, Bascussion mirrors the party vibes of groups like Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Rebirth Brass Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, while retaining a unique style all their own. Blending funk, samba, hip-hop, soul and jazz, Bascussion is fronted by a stellar cast of professional musicians:
Saxophone - Yeo Hyun-woo
Trumbone - Kim Dong-hyun
Trumpet - Lee Kwang-jea & Kim Eun-hyung
Tuba - Lee Sang-wook
Sousaphone - The King
Drum - Jeon Woo-young
Percussion - Zion Luz
A tuba and a sousaphone? Also, some of their uniqueness might come from the percussion end of the group, consisting of the two leading members of the 30+ member batucada/samba percussion group Rapercussion. Drummer Jeon Woo-young is a powerhouse involved in many percussion-driven side projects, and lends his effortless samba funk to help create Bascussion’s sound. Percussionist Zion Luz is a master of all things auxiliary percussion, and both dudes are sure to have their dreads flying as fast as their drum breakdowns.
Bascussion will be joined by local reggae/ska big band Ska Wakers, who have recently played many festivals and shows with bands like Kingston Rudieska and Bibim Dub Trio. Ska Wakers are destined for the big stage, and their energy is unmatched in the Busan scene. Just see if you can dance harder than their lead singer!
Also joining the show are two newcomers to the Busan music scene, and they are already making big waves. MC Esia (France) & MC Arminda (Portugal) are singers and MCs in the reggae sound system Uprooted Sunshine from Shanghai. They’ve recently relocated to Geoje Island, and have just completed a wild two-week residency at AGIT art and event space, where they wowed PNU audiences with their high-speed drum and bass MC performances. These are world-class reggae singers who also love the speed and rhythms of drum and bass, and they spit rapid-fire flows in Portuguese and French, dropping jaws and blowing minds.
To round out the night are local purveyors of all things bass, Malbool and Griff, residents of the night BASSment at Almost Famous. They’ll be spinning all-vinyl sets that will be carefully selected for the dance floor in the genres of brass, baile funk, afrobeat, samba, batucada and tropical.
This is going to be a crazy good time, and a rare event in Busan, so come out to Vinyl Underground this Saturday, September 1!
