Here are some phrases that you will use a lot:
Yes Nay
No Ahn-nee-yo
Hello Ahn -young-ha-say-yo. (It may sound like Ahn-yah-say-yo)
Good-bye (if the other person is leaving) Ahn-young-hee-gah-say-yo
Good-bye (if you are the one who is leaving) Ahn-young-hee-gyay-say-yo
Thank you Kahm-sah-hahm-nee-dah (Kahm sounds like ‘com’ and rhymes with hahm)
Nice to meet you. Bon-gahp soom-nee-dah
I am Canadian. Nah-nun Can-ah-dah sa-rahm eem-nee-dah. For your own country substitute the following for Can-ah-dah:
American mee-guke sah-rahmBrittish Young-guke Sah-rahmAustralian ho-joo sarahm
Other Nationalities: (your country’s name) sah-rahm
I don’t believe in fan death. Sung-poong-gi roh chu-gull sue-up-soy-yo (if you are here for any length of time you will learn of the infamous Korean ‘fan death’)
Especially useful to teachers:
Be quiet! Cho-yong-hee ha-say-yo
Sit down! Ahn-jah say-yo
I don’t understand. Ee-hay-lil moat hay yo
I don’t know. Mole-eye-yo
Although you might not say the following, for some unknown reason I tend to hear these a lot:
Fool/Dunce Bah-bo
You are fat. Doong-doong hay-yo
Why do have so much body hair? Way tull no-moo mahn-nah-yo (if anyone has a good answer for this one please let me know)
What’s your phone number? Jun-wha bone-ho moe-ee-ay-yo
How much is it? Ee-gut ull-mah-ay-yo
Do you sell a bigger bra? Kun bu-lah-jeer pall-eye-yo (the answer will most likely be ahn-nee-yo)
***Whenever you ask a question, make sure your inflection goes up at the end of the sentence***
Study tips:
Korean people are not used to hearing foreign accents, so don’t get discouraged if people don’t understand your pronunciation at first. Korean people are also very patient and appreciate it when you try to learn Korean. Keep using what you know and practicing, and you will see results in a matter of weeks.
