BUSAN, South Korea -- This weekend marks the opening of a brand new lounge in the Kyungsung area: The Blue Monkey. Designed in the manner of chic, Gangnam after-hours clubs that are frequented by Seoul’s upscale socialite set, it is sure to be THE place to see and be seen this spring and summer.
Across the ample dance floor, a wall of illuminated bubbles (imported from Germany and one-of-a-kind in Korea) throb and undulate to the professional DJ driven beats. It is easy to see, there is no other place like this in Kyungsung.
After years of experience in the industry, owners Johnny Choo (of Paradise Casino fame) and Dan Evil (just call him Doctor) are thrilled to open the bar they’ve always dreamed of. “We wanted it to be, above all, trendy and comfortable,” explains Evil. “Also, it is intended to be a ‘hybrid’ bar.” That is, The Blue Monkey will not be catering to specifically Korean or foreign clientele.
The model has been tried before to varying degrees of success., but never in such a flawless, upscale manner. The spectrum of drinks available is overwhelming: just-your-basic drafts and cocktails to martinis, premium beers, wine, margaritas and exotic shots. To prove they aren’t all that snooty, they also offer beer-bongs, bucket shots, and yard o’ beers.

Some very special events are in the works as well, including Da Meegook Movement from Gwangju later this month and a Cinco De Mayo party to properly celebrate the Mexican in each of us. This weekend’s opening festivities include over 3 million won (there is a Dr. Evil joke in there somewhere) in giveaways. With each cocktail bought, you receive a scratch ticket that could net you free drinks, stuffed animals, food or even Paradise Casino chips!
So be sure to swing by the Blue Monkey Friday or Saturday and try your luck at the scratch-offs. The bar is located underneath Family Mart at the very heart of the Kyungdae scene. Show up early for the easy-going lounge vibe and stay for the after-hours dance party. You might think the last thing the KSU area needs is more monkeys, but I’m sure the blue variety will prove to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
